Kohl's Department Stores
Department stores are a highly demanding environment for air conditioning equipment - especially in warm climates. Their cooling is constantly challenged by high ceilings, bright lights, the constant opening and closing of doors, even the presence of warmth-emitting customers. Of course, keeping those customers comfortable is a major concern. So is controlling costs so that prices and services can be maintained at optimal levels.
To determine opportunities for reducing their stores' operating costs, Kohl's requested EMP to conduct a thorough Energy Survey of numerous facilities, including the air conditioning units atop this Kohl's store in southwestern Florida.
More than two dozen motors in the rooftop air conditioning units were analyzed, and 21 of them warranted corrective action. EMP installed its technology to increase the power factor as well as to prolong the motors' service lives, and reduce energy consumption, and thus operating costs.
The results were impressive: a 23.7% reduction in energy consumption.
Venice Golf and Country Club Venice FL
For the Venice Golf and Country Club, keeping things green means more than watering the fairways
It means saving energy - and money - by converting essential systems to the use of cutting edge technology.
Recent installations by Energy Management Partners (EMP) have made significant differences in the Club's operating costs. These installations included Zero Energy water heating and KVEC Energy Controllers. Installations were quick and painless.
Zero EnergyTM: Heating water for the Club House restaurant now requires virtually no LP gas or power from the electric company. Heat generated by air conditioning equipment is captured and used to heat water to the desired temperature.
Because the Zero system removes heat from the refrigerant gas, the gas is cooler when it returns to the compressor - increasing the efficiency of the a/c unit.
The ingenious Zero EnergyTM system uses basic physics to achieve 80-90% savings in water heating costs, without pumps or electrical connections. With savings this significant, breakeven is achieved very quickly.
KVEC reduced energy costs for controlling water levels of several lakes. Seasonal variations in rainfall and runoff must be balanced. A powerful "jockey" pump is used to transfer water from lake to lake. EMP's KVEC Energy Controller technology was used to improve the efficiency of this energy-hungry pump, by raising power factor, lowering amperage flow and reducing operational costs.
The improvements also included increased efficiency for air conditioning which will lower power costs for a/c by 11.7% - and pay for itself in less than 19 months. This EMP technology utilizes a series of capacitors to capture and store electricity before it is metered and returns it to the compressor motors.
Sherwin-Williams DSC Distribution Support Center Florida
Controlling costs at every available point is an essential part of today's business world. Well managed companies like Sherwin-Williams take advantage of opportunities to save energy whenever they can.
EMP performed an energy survey at this distribution facility and developed a report to management outlining the opportunities for savings.
Numerous motors were surveyed. Several air conditioning units were equipped with EMP installed energy controllers to raise power factors and reduce energy costs.
The results: Energy use was reduced by 26%.
Industrial Metal Finishing Houston TX
The production line is the heartbeat of this company. Keeping it healthy is more than just necessary. Improving its operating costs helps the financial health of the entire company.
IMF provides coatings, plating and treatments for metals that are used in many highly demanding and inhospitable environments, such as aerospace and offshore wells. Most of these finishes are sprayed on. The source of air for spraying - the production line - is a large compressor that pulls 52 amps. And it must run 24/7. When surveyed by EMP technicians, this vital compressor showed a very low power factor: 0.57. Voltage and amperage were out of phase by more than 42%. This was causing the compressor motor to work far harder than necessary and consume large amounts of energy. EMP provided the energy controller technology that was used to correct power factor, which in turn reduced amperage draw by 16 amps - a 31% saving. Improving the power factor will also prolong the life of this very expensive motor, because it now runs much cooler.
Colonial Oaks Assisted Living
Retirement facility for senior citizens Sugar Land TX
The comfort and well-being of its residents is the constant focus of Colonial Oaks. Controlling the costs of that comfort is a vital concern as well.
A large chiller system keeps the entire building at a constant, comfortable temperature. Our Energy Survey of this gracious building revealed opportunities for decreasing power usage, and the resulting reduction in power costs.
Using KVEC technology, the energy burn rate for the facility's a/c system was reduced by 25.9%.
Plans are under way to employ KVEC technology at other Colonial Oaks facilities.
